The DeLorean DMC - 12 was the brain child of John DeLorean and DeLorean Motor Company. The car was manufactures from 1981-1983. Due to the vehicle being manufactured over two model years I have not included a manufacturer year in the title tag. The only way to identify the make year is decoding the vin number. There were a total of 9,000 DMC-12 manufactured and it is estimated that less than 6,500 have survived.
The car itself was believed to be made out of stainless steel, although it does have stainless steel brushed panels those panels are attached to a fiberglass body and the panels are laid over the fiberglass. The brushed stainless panels were shipped from the factory unpainted. The vehicle also features the gull wing doors. Gull wing doors open like the hatch of a minivan but go up to a position over the roof. The DeLorean has the basic style of the 1980s Lotus Espirit.
The DeLorean DMC-12 became popular with the 1985 movie, Back to the Future and the other two movies in the trilogy. For the original manufacturing of the DeLorean, the movie came out too late to save the company from bankruptcy. The company went into bankruptcy in 1983.
The demise of DMC in Ireland was caused by several factors. The first and probably foremost was that the vehicle was presented to the general public during the worst automotive market since the 1930s. When you add that the company, in building its production factory, was well over budget and behind production schedule and John DeLoreans legal problems, which were later unfounded, the fate of the original company was sealed. The dream of John DeLorean was crushed.
Although this car was produced in Ireland, the market for the DeLorean was targeted for the US. Instead of reengineering the vehicle for the world market the company used a conversion kit for the 20 right handed drive vehicles that were sold in Europe. DMC was bought out of bankrupcy by a company in Texas who now controls the New Old Stock and produces a limited amount of vehicles on the original chassis.
