Coca-Cola is a popular soft drink that was first created in the late 19th century. The history of Coca-Cola dates back to 1886 when a pharmacist named John Pemberton created a new kind of tonic that he called "Pemberton's French Wine Coca." The tonic was made from a combination of coca leaves (the source of cocaine) and kola nuts (which contain caffeine), as well as other ingredients like sugar and spices.
Pemberton initially marketed the tonic as a cure for a variety of ailments, including headaches, fatigue, and impotence. However, when the city of Atlanta, Georgia, passed prohibition laws in 1886, Pemberton was forced to remove the alcohol from his tonic. He replaced the wine with sugar syrup, and thus Coca-Cola was born.
