Description
This is a Black and white image of an elk (Cervus Canadensis) grazing. Elk are a large member of the deer family not often seen except by those who are out and about on the back roads throughout their inhabited ranges.
I thoroughly enjoyed observing this Elk for an extended period of time, like 30-45 minutes. Then I began to capture images of it. I believe that sometimes this is a hazard of loving nature and observing it. You sometimes miss the best shots. In this case, thankfully I did not.
This elk was photographed in the spring. The black and white image does a very good job of highlighting the texture of its coat. The black and white also blocks out some of the color distractions of the scene. Not every image is appropriate to be captured in black and white but this Elk image truly was.
If you did not know the elk is the largest member of the family that contains the white tailed deer, mule deer, and the Muntjac Deer along with other deer species. When they are found observing them proves how graceful and majestic this animal truly is.
There are several spots in North Carolina and Tennessee that you can observe these beautiful animals. Of course you can observe them in a zoo but if you want to observe them in the wild you can see them in several reserve areas in the Smoky Mountains. In the wild they act a lot differently than they do in captivity and their truly beauty is on display. For those who do not know, elk, while in the rut can be extremely aggressive and you should never approach a wild elk or for that matter any other wild animal. While they look like somewhat friendly large deer their horns and hoofs can truly hurt you.
