This is a vintage Ethyl Gasoline sign.

The Ethyl Gasoline Corporation was a significant company in the early 20th century that played a crucial role in the development and widespread use of the gasoline additive tetraethyl lead (TEL). TEL was introduced as an anti-knock agent in gasoline, which helped prevent engine knocking and allowed for the use of higher compression ratios in internal combustion engines.

The significance of the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation lies in its successful promotion and commercialization of TEL. The company was founded in 1923 as a joint venture between General Motors (GM) and Standard Oil of New Jersey (now ExxonMobil) to produce and distribute TEL. The leaded gasoline produced by Ethyl Gasoline quickly gained popularity due to its ability to improve engine performance.
