This is the retention pool upstream from Great Falls in Rockingham NC. The retention pool was a man-made creation to keep the water flowing over the falls in the 1800s and early 1900s to supply kinetic energy for the cotton mill operations. the mill initially was not energized and operated solely from the water wheel.
The Great falls waterfall in Rockingham Co is located on Little Carr Creek behind Great falls mill. It was a natural waterfall that had a dam built around it to power the cotton textile mill there. The mill was originally built in 1833, burnt down by Sherman during the civil war, rebuilt in 1869, and then burned again in 1972. The ruins of the mill remain and are in front of the waterfall.
