Scientific Name: The scientific name of the lion is Panthera leo.

Habitat: Lions are found in various parts of Africa, primarily in grasslands, savannas, and open woodlands. A small population of lions also exists in the Gir Forest National Park in India.

Social Structure: Lions are known for their social behavior. They typically live in groups called prides, which consist of multiple related females, their cubs, and a few adult males. Male lions that are not part of a pride are often solitary or form small groups called coalitions.

Size and Appearance: Adult male lions are larger and heavier than females. Males can weigh between 330 to 550 pounds (150 to 250 kilograms) and measure around 8 to 10 feet (2.5 to 3 meters) in length, excluding the tail. Female lions are generally smaller, weighing around 265 to 400 pounds (120 to 180 kilograms).

Mane: Male lions are known for their impressive manes, which are unique to the species. The mane serves several purposes, including providing protection during fights and displaying dominance to rivals and potential mates.

Diet: Lions are carnivorous predators and primarily hunt large ungulates such as wildebeests, zebras, and various types of antelope. They are also opportunistic and will scavenge or hunt smaller prey if necessary.

Reproduction: Female lions give birth to a litter of one to four cubs after a gestation period of about 110 days. Cubs are usually born in dens hidden in thick vegetation and are cared for by the mother and other females in the pride.
