Maytag Corporation is a home and commercial appliance brand founded by Frederick Maytag in 1893 in Newton, Iowa. Initially, the company produced farm equipment such as threshing machines, but by the early 1900s, it began producing washing machines.
Maytag became well-known for its high-quality washing machines and dryers. In 1925, Maytag introduced the first washing machine with a gyrotator, which used a gyrating motion to clean clothes. The company continued to innovate and introduced the first automatic washing machine in 1949.
In the 1960s, Maytag expanded into the kitchen appliance market, introducing refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers. The company continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s, becoming one of the largest appliance manufacturers in the world.
In 1986, Maytag acquired Magic Chef, another appliance manufacturer. In 2001, Maytag acquired Amana Corporation, another well-known appliance brand. However, Maytag struggled financially in the 2000s, facing competition from low-cost foreign manufacturers. In 2006, the company was acquired by Whirlpool Corporation for $1.7 billion.
Today, Maytag is still a subsidiary of Whirlpool and continues to produce a range of appliances, including washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens. The brand is known for its durable and reliable products, and its washing machines are still considered some of the best in the industry.
