McDonald's is one of the world's largest fast-food restaurant chains, serving millions of customers daily in more than 100 countries. The company was founded in 1940 by Richard and Maurice McDonald as a barbecue restaurant in San Bernardino, California.
In the early days, the McDonald brothers were known for their efficient kitchen system and fast service. They eventually streamlined their menu to focus on just a few items, including hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, and milkshakes. This "Speedee Service System" allowed them to serve food quickly and consistently, and became the foundation for the modern fast-food industry.
In 1954, Ray Kroc, a milkshake machine salesman, became interested in the McDonald's business and convinced the brothers to let him franchise their concept. Kroc opened the first franchised McDonald's restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, and later bought the company from the McDonald brothers in 1961.
Under Kroc's leadership, McDonald's grew rapidly, expanding across the United States and eventually into international markets. The company introduced new menu items, such as the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, and Chicken McNuggets, and became known for its iconic branding and marketing campaigns.
Today, McDonald's is one of the most recognizable brands in the world, with over 38,000 locations worldwide and a menu that has evolved to include salads, breakfast items, and other options. Despite criticism of its impact on public health and the environment, McDonald's continues to be a dominant force in the fast-food industry.
