Description
This is a vintage Michelin advertising sign.
Michelin is a French tire company that has a long and storied history dating back to the late 19th century. The company was founded in 1889 by two brothers, André and Édouard Michelin, who began by manufacturing bicycle tires in Clermont-Ferrand, France.
In 1891, the brothers introduced the first detachable bicycle tire, which revolutionized the cycling industry. They went on to produce their first automobile tire in 1895, and in 1898, they created the first pneumatic car tire.
Michelin continued to innovate throughout the early 20th century, introducing steel-corded tires in 1923, and radial tires in 1946. The company also expanded its operations globally, opening its first factory outside of France in Italy in 1906.
During World War II, Michelin was forced to close its factories in France, but it continued to produce tires in other countries, including the United States. After the war, the company resumed production in France and began to expand its product line to include other rubber products, such as conveyor belts and gaskets.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Michelin continued to innovate, developing new tire technologies and expanding its operations globally. The company also began to invest in other industries, including aviation, hotels, and restaurants.
Today, Michelin is one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world, with operations in more than 170 countries. The company produces a wide range of tires for cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and aircraft, as well as other rubber products. Michelin is also known for its Michelin Guide, a prestigious restaurant guide that rates restaurants around the world.
