Artist's Description
This is a black and white image of Mingus Mill in the Smoky Mountains. It is located just outside of Cherokee, North Carolina. The mill was originally built on this exact location in 1886. The mill was rehabilitated in 1968 and is fully functional today. One of the unique features of this mill is its a turbine mill. Water turn a turbine instead of a water wheel and grinds the corn or wheat into flour. The millrace (wooden planking on the left of the image leading to the mill) brings water from Mingus Creek to the mill for the turbine to operate.
