Description
This is a vintage Mobiloil sign.
Mobile Oil Corporation, also known as Mobil, was an American oil company that was founded in 1911 and was headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia. The company was originally called the Standard Oil Company of New York and was a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Trust.
In 1920, the company changed its name to Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, after a merger with the Vacuum Oil Company. In 1931, the company was renamed again to Socony-Vacuum Corporation.
In the 1950s, the company began to use the Mobil brand name for its products and operations. The name was derived from "Mobiloil", a brand of motor oil that the company had been producing since 1917.
Mobil continued to expand its operations throughout the 20th century, becoming a major player in the oil and gas industry. The company established refineries and chemical plants around the world, and its products were sold in more than 100 countries.
In 1999, Mobil merged with Exxon to form ExxonMobil, one of the largest oil and gas companies in the world. The Mobil brand name continued to be used for some of ExxonMobil's products and operations, but in 2015, the company announced that it would be phasing out the Mobil brand name in favor of ExxonMobil.
Today, ExxonMobil remains a major player in the oil and gas industry, with operations around the world. The company is involved in exploration, production, refining, and marketing of oil and gas products, as well as the development of new energy technologies.
