Artist's Description

In the early 2000's the state of Ohio commissioned a couple hundred bans to be painted with the image you see here to commemorate the bicentennial of the State.

The statehood of Ohio can be considered controversial by most historians. While the State was annexed in 1803 the paperwork to officially make it a State was not officially signed until 1976. In preparation for the US Bicentennial the state began doing research to determine when it was officially signed as a state. During that research they discovered that the paperwork was never signed, so the actual paperwork was completed in 1976 but assigned the date that Ohio became a State to 1803 when the paperwork should have been signed.

At any rate this was one of the few surviving bans painted for the bicentennial celebration. Most have either been painted over or torn down.
