Description
This is an image of a Panamanian golden frog (Atelopus zeteki). These frogs are highly poisonous and are native to the rivers and streams in Panama. Due to their scarcity it is believed that this frog may actually be extinct in its natural environment and range. As a matter of fact one has not been found in the wild since 2007. Many institutions and zoos have collections of these animals in breeding programs. This is one of several in the NC zoo's program.
In spite of its name the golden frog it is actually a toad. The toxins produced by this toad can, in large doses, cause death in 20 to 30 minutes. Their toxins cause grand mal convultions and shut down the respiratory and circulation systems.
In spite of their toxicity they are beautiful creatures.
