Description
This is an image of a Red Spotted Admiral (Limenitis arthemis astyanax). They are a subspecies of the White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis). These butterflies are indigenous to the mid Atlantic and Midwestern states in the US. They are often found in wooded areas and semi wooded suburbs through out their range.
They range in color and brilliance from nearly purple to deep royal blue but their patterning is very consistent through the entire species. They are typically found arounds stands of birches and aspens.
