Savage Arms is an American firearms manufacturer with a long and interesting history. Here is a brief overview:
Savage Arms was founded in 1894 by Arthur Savage in Utica, New York. The company began by producing a hammerless lever-action rifle, the Model 99, which became a popular hunting rifle in the early 20th century. Savage was an innovative company and introduced many new technologies to the firearms industry, including the first hammerless striker-fired rifle and the first high-powered rifle designed specifically for the .30-06 cartridge.
During World War I, Savage Arms produced the Lewis light machine gun for the U.S. military. After the war, the company continued to innovate, introducing the first rifle with a detachable box magazine, the Model 1920.
In the 1930s, Savage Arms was acquired by the Stevens Company, another firearms manufacturer, and the two companies merged to form Savage-Stevens. During W...
