The history of Smith & Wesson began in Norwich, Connecticut, where Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson met in the 1840s. Smith was a gunsmith and inventor, while Wesson was a metallurgist and businessman. They joined forces in 1852 to form the Smith & Wesson Company, with the goal of developing a revolver that could fire a fully self-contained cartridge.
Their first revolver, the Model 1, was introduced in 1857. It was a single-action, tip-up revolver that fired a .22 short cartridge. The Model 1 was followed by a series of other revolvers, including the Model 2 and Model 3, which were larger and more powerful than the Model 1.
