Description
This is an image of an eastern newt in a shallow pool of water.
Anyone who spends any time in the spring around small bodies of water will come across critters such as this eastern newt now and again. The image was taken in the backwaters of Beech Fork Lake during the time of low pool. Beech fork is a man-made lake.
At any rate I was hiking around the lake trying to get to some of the beeches that are not often frequented by visitors to see what was out there. At one point in the lake the water is shallow during low pool and easy to cross. As I was preparing to cross at this low point I realized there was something in the water and it was looking at me. At first I was not exactly sure what it was, the creature moved rather quickly so I waited what seemed an eternity for it to come back out and to the surface. It was this eastern newt.
For many years, I had thought this was some sort of tadpole and began to do some research to figure out what type of frog this would be. I had never seen a tadpole in these colors before. Come to find out it was not a tadpole at all rather it was a member of the salamander family, an eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens). I have to admit although being on the water a lot I have not run across critters such as these before or if I had I just attributed them to some sort of tadpole and not given them a second thought.
The newt really did intrigue me it was graceful and quick, unlike most tadpoles. The funny thing is it did not seem afraid of me being there and it almost looks like it has an attitude, as if to say how did you find me and why are you disturbing me.
