At the turn of the 20th century farm life was much simpler than it is today. The smoky mountain farms traditionally had split rail fences, manual or horse drawn hay rakes and the like. New technology such as steam driven tractors would grace the area but considerably later than in many other parts of the US. a much simpler time indeed.
