Description
This is a Plymouth Schooner hood ornament. This specific hood ornament was on a 1934 Plymouth. Hood ornaments are also known as hood mascots.
Back at the turn of the century the radiator cap was on the outside of the hood and not under it as it is today. This steel or chrome cap was affixed with a moto-meter, which is a clear glass guage, that allowed the operator of the vehicle to see the temperature of the coolant or just a plain cap.
In the 1920's the plain caps were adorned with artwork and became very popular. By the end of the 1920s the radiator cap was moved to under the hood. The popularity of the hood art remained even after the radiator cap went under the hood. So the hood ornaments remained through the 1950's. I really like ships so this hood ornament really appeals to me.
