Description
This is an image of a 1930s Buick flying lady hood ornament. The hood ornament of hood mascot as its called by some was the pinnacle of art deco styling on cars of the day. The styling of the cars from the 30s-50s were things of imagination a view of the modern times and modern styling. The flying lady or flying goddess, in some models of hood ornament, illustrated Americas love with the automobile. Cars significantly impacted life and travel in America.
Typically the more ornate the hood ornament the more expensive the vehicle, however this is not always true. This specific hood ornament was on a 1932 Buick model 67. In and by itself the car is rather rare and the hood ornament is rare as well. It was manufactured during the great depression (1929-1939). The car and hood ornament was manufactured while the great depression was in full swing. There were 8000 Buick model 67s built in 1932 and the average base price was $1,233.00. This was at a time when the average annual salary was $1,368.00. The car would have costed the equivalent of $21,500.00 in todays dollars.
At any rate and although I have not been able to identify the artist of Buicks flying lady hood mascot, that does not discount its value, beauty or rarity. The hood mascot is a glimpse into a bygone era when people still looked at cars as things of beauty and wide-eyed amazement. I think this is something that we have all but forgotten today and now take for granted.
Cars today and their trim pieces are functional but they do not have that flash, the power, the chrome statement that the cars of the 20s-50 did possess. What can I say I love muscle cars but have a sentimental place in my heart for the work of art types of vehicles from this era.
